Every vendor you work with sits at /vendors in the sidebar. Click a vendor tile and its detail card opens with a set of sections: The Contract, Renewal & People, Ratings & Feedback, Score & Research, Stack Fit (when Verinode has something to say about it), Alternatives, Products, Related SOPs, Paperwork, and Community. This article covers the Alternatives section and the Compare tool that sits alongside it, the two places Verinode helps you weigh keeping a vendor against replacing it.
Two different comparisons live here, and they answer two different questions:
- Alternatives answers "is this vendor the best option in its category, or is something better rated or cheaper waiting to be looked at." It is Verinode's own ranked shortlist, already built for you.
- Compare answers "how do the vendors I'm actually weighing stack up, side by side, on the numbers that matter." You choose the columns yourself, mixing vendors already in your stack with anything from that shortlist.
The Alternatives section
Open a vendor's detail card and scroll (or tap the Alternatives pill in the section nav) to reach it. The section header reads "Alternatives in this category," with the subtitle "Ranked by Verinode Score, peer rating, and category fit."
Where the list comes from. Verinode looks at every vendor Verinode's research catalog has recorded in the same category as the one you're viewing, excludes the vendor itself, and ranks what's left by a blend of research score, how much stronger or weaker that score is than your current vendor's, how much peer pricing data backs it up, and whether it sits in the same pricing tier as your current vendor (a same-tier match counts as a small point in its favor, since it means a comparable buying decision rather than a downgrade or a luxury upsell). The two highest-ranked vendors are surfaced.
The comparison table. The table shows one column for your current vendor (labeled Current) plus one column per surfaced alternative. Each column carries the same four rows:
- Verinode Score: the alternative's research score (same 0 to 10 scale used everywhere else on the platform) with its Strong / Solid / Mixed / Weak label as a small pill beside it. A dash means Verinode hasn't scored that vendor yet.
- Cost (labeled Cost per seat on the Current column when you have a seat count on file, otherwise Cost): your current vendor's own monthly spend, per seat if you've entered a seat count (with the full monthly total and seat count shown in parentheses beside it), or the median monthly price peers report paying for that alternative. A dash means no pricing data exists yet for that vendor.
- Your rating (Current column) or Peer rating (alternative columns): your current column shows your own 1 to 5 star rating from the Ratings & Feedback section. Alternative columns don't carry an operator-supplied rating from you (you haven't used them), so instead of a number this row shows how many operators contributed pricing data for that alternative, phrased as "N operators," or a dash if none have.
- Agent: a one-line note under a hairline, present only on alternative columns, explaining in plain language why Verinode is surfacing that option. It's composed from the actual numbers, not a model call, so it appears instantly: things like "Peers pay 18% less, and rate it higher," "Verinode Score +0.7 vs your current," or "Comparable option at 12% lower median cost." When neither price nor score gives a clear edge, it falls back to "Category leader worth comparing" or "Comparable option in the category."
The badge above each alternative's name reads Recommended when that alternative's research score is meaningfully stronger than your current vendor's (roughly half a point or more on the 0 to 10 scale), and Option otherwise. Your current vendor's column is always labeled Current.
What "the same category" means for the numbers. The Verinode Score shown in the Score & Research section for your current vendor is compared against the category median, the middle research score across every vendor Verinode has scored in that category. That's a separate, single number shown up in Score & Research, not part of the Alternatives table itself, but it's built from the same pool of vendors the Alternatives table draws from.
Note
Verinode Score and peer/operator ratings are deliberately kept on separate rows and never blended. The Score comes from Verinode's independent research: market reviews, security posture, adoption signals, company trajectory. Ratings are what you and other operators actually reported after using the vendor. They can agree or disagree, and seeing them side by side is the point.
Loading and empty states
While Verinode's agent is still assembling the shortlist, the section shows: "Agent is pulling alternatives in this category…"
If the category has no other vendors in Verinode's research catalog yet (or none with enough data to rank), the section reads: "No alternatives to compare yet, Verinode research on this category is still forming." As Verinode's research catalog fills in for that category, more vendors flow into this comparison automatically. There's nothing to configure.
The two CTAs under the table
Two buttons sit under the comparison table:
- Contact Verinode | Advisory (burgundy, the Advisory brand color) opens the contact-advisory page pre-filled with this vendor's context and a "negotiate" intent, so the Advisory team knows you're weighing a renewal or replacement decision on this specific vendor.
- Compare scrolls back up to the top of this same comparison table. It's there so the CTA sits near whichever part of the table you were actually reading when you decided you wanted a closer look, rather than making you scroll to find it.
The Compare tool
Compare is a separate, wider modal for building your own side-by-side comparison, not limited to two columns and not limited to your current vendor's own category peers.
Where to open it. Two entry points, both labeled Compare:
- The vendor detail card's hero action row (next to the survey prompt, Export PDF, and Archive buttons). Opening it here seeds the comparison with the vendor you're currently viewing, plus its top two Alternatives-section picks, already loaded as columns.
- The Compare button under the Alternatives table (see above), which scrolls to the table rather than opening the modal.
How columns work. The modal supports up to 4 columns at once. A counter in the header reads "N of 4" once you have at least one column. Each column comes from one of two pools:
- From your stack: any vendor relationship marked active (archived vendors aren't offered as add candidates).
- Catalog alternatives: the alternatives already loaded for the vendor you opened Compare from. Compare doesn't run a new search of the full catalog, it works with the alternatives the detail card already pulled.
To add a column, click a vendor chip in the picker (each chip shows a small logo plus the vendor name, up to 12 candidates listed per pool). To remove a column, click the small × in the top-right corner of that column's header card. Your own stack's columns get a "Your stack" eyebrow label in copper; catalog alternative columns get an "Alternative" eyebrow label in gray, so you can tell at a glance which vendors you already pay for and which are candidates.
While you have fewer than 4 columns filled, a collapsed "+ Add another vendor to compare" row sits under the table. Click it to expand the same picker inline without leaving the comparison you've already built.
What each row in the Compare table shows
The labels column on the left lists eight metrics, each rendered per vendor column:
- Category: the vendor's category, written in plain words (never a raw database code).
- Verinode Score: the research score to one decimal, with its label (Strong, Solid, Mixed, Weak) beside it when available. Dash if unscored.
- Monthly cost: for a vendor from your stack, your actual contracted monthly amount. For a catalog alternative, the peer median monthly price reported for it. Dash if no cost data exists.
- Cost / seat: monthly cost divided by seat count, only shown when both figures exist. This only ever populates for vendors from your stack (catalog alternatives don't carry a seat count in this view). Dash otherwise.
- My rating: your own 1 to 5 star rating, shown as "N/5." Only vendors from your stack carry this; catalog alternatives show a dash, since you haven't rated something you don't use.
- Team rating: the average satisfaction rating your team has logged for that vendor, to one decimal, shown as "N.N/5." Same as above, only populated for stack vendors.
- Renewal: your contract's renewal date, formatted as month, day, and two-digit year (for example "Aug 14, '26"). Only meaningful for vendors from your stack.
- Switchability: how easy Verinode assesses it would be to move off that vendor (data lock-in, contract terms, integration depth), written in plain words. Only populated for stack vendors where Verinode has assessed it.
A dash in any cell means that number doesn't exist yet for that vendor, not that it's zero.
Empty state
If you open Compare with no stack vendors and no catalog alternatives available to add (a rare case, since the modal is normally opened pre-seeded with at least one vendor), the picker reads: "Nothing available to compare yet."
The Advisory handoff from Compare
Under the comparison grid sits a Verinode Advisory callout: "Source new vendors for me." with the body "Hand the comparison to Verinode Advisory. We'll shortlist three to five vendors against your stack profile, run the outreach, and bring quotes back with peer-grounded negotiation notes." Clicking Get quotes via Advisory opens a compact follow-up modal titled "Send to Verinode Advisory," pre-filled with the names of every vendor currently in your comparison. You can add an optional note before submitting. Submitting creates a support ticket and emails the Advisory team directly; you'll see "Request sent. The Advisory team will reach out shortly." once it goes through, and they reply within one business day. This is a genuine handoff to Verinode's Advisory team, a human service, not an automated agent action, which is why it uses the burgundy Advisory styling rather than the teal IQ styling used elsewhere on the platform.
Best-practice example
Say your restoration equipment monitoring vendor renews in 45 days. Open its detail card and check Alternatives first: if a competitor shows a Recommended badge with an agent note like "Verinode Score +0.6 vs your current" and a materially lower peer median cost, that's worth a closer look. Click Compare from the hero row, it opens pre-seeded with your current vendor and that top alternative. Add a second alternative from the catalog pool if one exists, and pull in another vendor from your own stack if you're also weighing a bundle deal. Read down the Verinode Score, Monthly cost, and Switchability rows together, a cheaper vendor with poor switchability and a Weak score is a worse trade than the numbers alone suggest. If the comparison still leaves you wanting real quotes rather than research estimates, use the Advisory callout to hand the shortlist to Verinode's Advisory team and let them run the outreach.
